How Do Smoke Detectors Work?

Ionisation Smoke Detectors

These detectors contain a small amount of Americium-241, a mildly radioactive material that ionises the air inside a sensing chamber, creating a small electrical current. When smoke particles enter the chamber, they interrupt this current and trigger the alarm.

Fastest at detecting: Fast-flaming fires that produce small, invisible combustion particles — think a pan fire or a rapidly burning paper fire.

Slower at detecting: Slow-smouldering fires that produce large particles and heavy smoke (e.g., a mattress, foam furniture, or an electrical fault fire).

False alarm risk: High in kitchens and bathrooms due to steam and cooking smoke.

Photoelectric Smoke Detectors

These use a light-emitting diode (LED) and a photosensor inside a chamber. In clear air, the light beam passes straight through and does not hit the sensor. When smoke particles enter, they scatter the light beam onto the sensor, triggering the alarm.

Fastest at detecting: Slow-smouldering fires that produce large, visible smoke particles — the most common type of residential fire (mattresses, upholstery, wiring).

Dual-Sensor Smoke Detectors
