Are emergency exit signs required to have battery backups?

We are renovating a cinema hall lobby in Airoli, Navi Mumbai. Do our glowing Exit signs need separate battery backups, or can they run on the main generator grid line?

Yes, they must have independent internal battery backups. In a major fire, the main electricity is disconnected, and the emergency generator can take up to 15-30 seconds to kick in. During those critical seconds, exit pathways must remain illuminated. Under NBC guidelines, emergency exit signs must contain a rechargeable battery (usually Ni-Cd) providing at least 90 to 120 minutes of continuous glow.
