Are mock fire drills legally mandatory for corporate offices?

We occupy a 3-floor office in Hinjawadi IT Park, Pune. Our HR says we must perform a mock evacuation drill every 6 months. Is this a legal requirement under local corporate guidelines?

Yes, it is legally mandatory. According to the National Building Code of India (Part 4, Life Safety Section) and the Maharashtra Fire Prevention Act, all commercial business occupancies (Group E) must conduct fire evacuation drills at least once every 6 months.

A detailed log of the drill, including evacuation time and employee headcounts, must be kept on file and submitted to fire inspectors during annual audits.
