Fire Extinguishers

Which fire extinguisher is used for combustible metal fires (Class D)?

We operate a machining unit using magnesium and aluminum in Chakan. Can we use standard ABC powder extinguishers for metal shavings, or is a special class required?

Standard ABC powder or water must NEVER be used on combustible metal fires (Class D). Water or ammonium phosphate reacts violently with burning magnesium, releasing hydrogen gas and causing explosions. You must install a dedicated Class D Sodium Chloride-based dry powder extinguisher. It smothers the fire by melting and forming a crust over the metal.
