Fire Hydrant System Design, Installation, and AMC in Maharashtra | FirePause
A fire hydrant system (wet riser) is the backbone of fire suppression in any medium to large building. When fire fighters arrive, they need immediate access to thousands of litres of water at pressure — not search for a hydrant or run hoses up multiple floors. Under NBCS 2026, fire hydrant systems are mandatory for all buildings above 15 metres height or 1,000 sq. metres floor area. FirePause provides complete hydrant system services across Maharashtra, from initial design through installation, testing, and ongoing annual maintenance contracts (AMC).
What Is a Fire Hydrant (Wet Riser) System?
A fire hydrant system (also called a wet riser or internal hydrant system) consists of:
- Dedicated underground fire water storage tank (minimum 50,000 litres for buildings up to 30m, larger for taller/higher hazard).
- Fire pump set (electric main pump + diesel standby pump + jockey pump).
- Wet riser piping (vertical pipes through staircase lobbies, minimum 100mm diameter).
- Landing valves (hydrant outlets) on each floor.
- First aid hose reels (25mm hose permanently connected).
- Fire brigade inlet (Siamese connection) at ground level.
The system is permanently pressurised (via the jockey pump), so when a landing valve is opened or a hose reel is deployed, water is available immediately — no waiting.
FirePause Hydrant System Services — End to End
1. Hydrant System Design (IS 3844 / NBCS 2026 Compliant)
Our fire engineers design hydrant systems to meet the specific requirements of your building:
- Water demand calculation based on building height, floor area, and occupancy hazard classification (per IS 3844).
- Pump sizing (flow rate in litres per minute, pressure in bar).
- Pipe sizing and layout (minimising pressure losses, ensuring adequate flow to the highest landing valve).
- Tank sizing (dedicated fire water storage, with refill arrangement).
- Compliance with local fire authority requirements (Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur fire departments have specific interpretations).
We provide stamped design drawings, hydraulic calculations, and a bill of quantities for approval.
2. Hydrant System Installation
FirePause's installation team executes the design with precision:
- Underground tank construction or modification: We coordinate with civil contractors to ensure the fire water tank is properly sized, located, and connected to the pump house (dedicated tank, not shared with domestic supply).
- Fire pump set installation: Electric main pump, diesel standby pump, and jockey pump installed in a fire-rated pump room with proper ventilation, drainage, and electrical supply (standby generator connection for electric pump).
- Wet riser piping: Heavy-gauge steel piping (IS 3589 or equivalent) installed in staircase lobbies, with proper supports, expansion joints, and corrosion protection (red paint or galvanising).
- Landing valves and hose reels: IS 5290-compliant landing valves (single or double outlet) at each floor level, with associated first aid hose reels (IS 884).
- Fire brigade inlet (Siamese connection): Installed at ground level, accessible from the road, with two 63mm instantaneous couplings, non-return valve, and drain valve. Clearly marked and protected from obstruction.
- Testing and commissioning: Full system pressure test, flow test (measuring pressure at the highest landing valve — minimum 3.5 bar per IS 3844), and pump performance verification.
3. Fire Hydrant System AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract)
A hydrant system that is not regularly maintained will fail when needed most. FirePause offers comprehensive AMC plans for hydrant systems:
Comprehensive Hydrant AMC includes:
- Weekly: Remote monitoring of pump start/cycle (or on-site for critical facilities). Jockey pump cycling log reviewed.
- Monthly: Visual inspection of pumps, piping, valves, landing valves, hose reels, and tank level. Operation of jockey pump (simulated pressure drop).
- Quarterly: Running test of electric main pump (15 minutes minimum). Check of diesel pump starting and running (battery voltage, fuel level, exhaust). Flow test of one representative landing valve.
- Annually: Full pump performance test (flow vs pressure curve), hydrostatic test of wet riser piping, inspection of tank interior (cleaning if required), replacement of worn seals/gaskets, comprehensive system report.
- 24/7 emergency call-out: Any pump failure, pipe leak, or valve issue — our technician on-site within 2 hours (Mumbai-Pune-Nashik corridor).
All AMC services are documented with signed service reports, photographs, and pressure/flow readings — audit-ready at all times.
