Fire Hydrant Systems in India: Design, Components, Standards, and Cost Guide
A fire hydrant system is the backbone of active fire suppression in any medium to large building. Properly designed and maintained, it gives fire fighters access to thousands of litres of water at pressure within seconds of arrival. In India, hydrant systems are mandatory for a wide range of buildings under NBCS 2026 and are a primary requirement for Fire NOC issuance.
When Is a Hydrant System Mandatory in India?
As per NBCS 2026, Part 4 Section 4, wet riser (internal hydrant) systems are mandatory in:
- All buildings above 15 metres in height.
- All buildings with a floor area exceeding 500 sq. metres per floor (commercial).
- All buildings with a basement.
- All industrial buildings above 300 sq. metres.
External yard hydrants are additionally required for industrial complexes and large campuses.
Key Components of a Building Fire Hydrant System
1. Underground Water Storage Tank (UG Sump)
The dedicated fire water storage reservoir. Capacity must meet IS 3844 requirements:
- Minimum 50,000 litres (50 KL) for buildings up to 30 metres.
- Minimum 75,000 litres (75 KL) for buildings 30–45 metres.
- Minimum 1,00,000 litres (1 lakh litres) for buildings above 45 metres.
- Industrial buildings: calculated based on hazard category and required flow duration (typically 30–60 minutes).
Critical: The fire water tank must be completely dedicated — not shared with domestic water supply. It must be directly connected to the fire pump room only.
2. Fire Pump Set
A fire pump set typically consists of:
- Electric main pump: Sized to deliver the required flow rate (litres/minute) at the required pressure (bar). Minimum 3.5 bar at the topmost outlet per IS 3844.
- Diesel-driven standby pump: Identical capacity to the main pump. Activates automatically if the electric supply fails.
- Jockey pump (pressure maintenance pump): A small pump that runs continuously to maintain system pressure and detect leaks. If the jockey pump runs frequently, it indicates a system leak requiring investigation.
3. Wet Riser Mains
Vertical pipes running through staircase lobbies from the pump room at the base to the terrace. These are always pressurised (hence "wet" riser). Minimum pipe diameter: 100 mm (4 inches) for buildings up to 45 metres, 150 mm (6 inches) for taller buildings.
4. Landing Valves (Hydrant Valves)
Gate valves or globe valves located at each floor landing, typically in a red-painted cabinet. Each landing valve connects to a 63 mm instantaneous coupling to which a fire hose is connected. NBCS 2026 requires at least one landing valve per 1,000 sq. metres of floor area.
5. First Aid Hose Reel
A 25 mm diameter rubber hose on a reel, permanently connected to the wet riser. Intended for use by building occupants before the fire brigade arrives. Maximum hose length: 36 metres per reel. Must reach every part of the floor when deployed.
6. Fire Brigade Inlet Connection (Siamese Connection)
Located at the ground floor, easily accessible from the road. Allows fire brigade tankers to pump additional water directly into the building's wet riser if the internal supply is insufficient. Must be marked clearly and kept unobstructed at all times — parking in front of a Siamese connection is a serious safety and legal violation.
7. Terrace-Level Tank (Roof Tank)
An overhead tank of minimum 5,000–10,000 litres connected to the top of the wet riser to provide gravity-fed pressure during pump startup delays. Required for buildings above 30 metres.
