Fire Retardant Paint and Coatings in India: How They Work, Types, and Applications
Fire retardant paints and intumescent coatings are among the most important passive fire protection products available for the Indian construction market. They protect structural steel, timber, cables, and concrete from fire — extending the time a building can withstand a fire before structural collapse occurs. The Science Behind Intumescent Coatings
Intumescent coatings contain a blend of chemical compounds that remain stable at normal temperatures. When exposed to heat (typically above 150–200°C), they undergo a char-forming reaction: the coating expands to 20–50 times its original thickness, forming a porous carbonaceous char layer that insulates the substrate below from the fire's heat. This char is an excellent thermal insulator — it significantly slows down the rate at which the protected surface reaches its critical failure temperature.

1. Thin-Film Intumescent Coating (Steel Protection)
