Fire Safety Signage in India: Types, Colours, IS Standards, and Legal Requirements
Fire safety signage is the silent guide that helps people navigate a smoke-filled, panic-ridden building to safety. Yet in countless Indian buildings, signs are missing, faded, incorrectly coloured, obstructed by furniture, or placed at the wrong height. This guide covers everything you need to know to be compliant and, more importantly, to save lives.
Why Signage Matters More Than You Think
Research on building fire evacuations consistently shows that people make navigation decisions within the first 15–30 seconds of an alarm. In smoke-filled conditions, visibility can drop to less than 1 metre. Signs that are self-luminous, correctly positioned, and clearly understood can be the difference between a successful evacuation and a fatality.
Applicable Indian Standards for Safety Signage
- IS 9457:1980 — Colours, layout, and symbols for safety signs.
- IS 12349:1988 — Fire detection and alarm systems (includes signage for alarm devices).
- NBC/NBCS 2026, Part 4, Clause 8: Prescribes minimum number, placement height, and illumination of emergency exit signs.
- IS 15885:2010 — Photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) emergency escape signs and markings.
Fire Safety Sign Colour Coding (IS 9457)

Types of Fire Safety Signs
1. Emergency Exit Signs
Green background with white running figure and directional arrow. Must be placed at every exit door and at every change of direction along an escape route. Must be continuously illuminated during building occupancy.
2. Fire Escape Route Arrows
Green directional arrows placed along corridors to guide occupants toward the nearest exit. NBCS 2026 requires placement at maximum 10-metre intervals along escape routes and at every junction.
3. Assembly Point Sign
Green background with white figure and four arrows. Must be placed at the designated assembly area outside the building, clearly visible from the building's main exits.
4. Fire Extinguisher Location Signs
Red background with white extinguisher symbol. Must be placed directly above each extinguisher and visible from a distance of at least 15 metres along the corridor. A downward arrow on the sign indicates the extinguisher is directly below.
5. Fire Alarm Call Point Signs
Red background with white flame symbol. Mounted directly above each manual call point (break-glass unit). Also includes instructional text: "In case of fire, break glass."
6. "Fire Door — Keep Shut" Sign
Blue background (mandatory instruction). Must be placed on both sides of every fire door in a building. This is one of the most consistently missing signs during fire safety audits.
Photoluminescent vs LED Emergency Signs
Photoluminescent (PL) signs: Absorb ambient light during normal operation and glow green in darkness. Zero power consumption. Per IS 15885, they must provide a minimum luminance of 2 mcd/m² for at least 60 minutes after light removal. Suitable for buildings with reliable ambient lighting. Very affordable: ?80–?400 per sign.
LED-lit emergency signs: Internally lit with LED and battery backup. Remain illuminated even in a total power failure. Required by NBCS 2026 for all escape route signs in buildings above 24 metres. Longer life (50,000+ hours), but higher cost: ?500–?2,500 per sign.
